I'm completely shocked that this was not announced on the mainstream media. Ravi was a true global ambassador of all things "love, peace and music" and an absolute virtuoso.

But then again, that is so Ravi Shankar, to fly out under the radar of the mainstream media. Ashes to the Ganges first.

His performance on the Monterey Pop DVD is mezmerizing and the opening sequence on the Concert For George DVD is beautiful as well.

For months i've attempted to get the Scorcese documentary from Netflixs on the life of George Harrison, Living World.
It was recently my bi-annual grind call to Comcast to get another extension on their program bundle deal and ended up earning 3 months of HBO for free. (Verizon Vios is unavailable in many parts of the Bay Area if at all.)

To make this long story short, Living World was on HBO last week and to see the relationship that George and Ravi shared was inspiring.

Ravi, go om....

Yes, here's the Ravi that died:

I see there's been a flurry of activity on the wikipedia Ravi Shankar page, as people keep adding the death info and then others remove it. The article has been semi-protected to try to keep that activity down.

It's odd that the article mentioned him teaching George Harrison Sitar and playing at Woodstock...

Indian musican and composer Ravi Shankar has passed away at the age of 91 on Wednesday 7th March.

Ravi Shankar began touring Europe in the mid 50's but it wasn't until he met George Harrison in 1966 that his musical genius was fully recognised by the western world. George Harrison travelled to India for a period of 6 weeks in order to learn to play the sitar under the tutleage of Shankar. In 1967 Ravi Shankar performed at the Monterey Pop Festival and won a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance for West Meets East, a collaboration with Yehudi Menuhin. Coincidentally the Beatles won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in the same year. The album included "Within You Without You" penned by Harrison, who had been influenced by the Indian classical music of Shankur.

In his career Shankar was awarded India's highest honour the Bharat Ratna in 1999 and won three Grammy Awards.

He is survived by his estranged son Ajay and daughter-in-law Hindi film actress, Varsha Usgaonkar

Some musical director named Ravi Shankar Sharma died, not renowned Sitar player Ravi Shankar.
